Tannoy Glenair 10 – the worst of Tannoy?

He’s generally the irritant on my WhatsApp, which I sometimes mute.
On the other hand, the guest is a treasury of knowledge, a considerable practitioner when it comes to vintage and does something that Tannoy – arouses emotions. Like each of us – audiophiles / music lovers, he has his theories, which he has checked lengthwise and breadth.
We were united by a difficult love forTannoy LGMAnd that’s how we talk from time to time.
So how is it with Glenair?
Glenairy are speakers from the Prestige series, it’s not just any entry level speaker. You can easily put it next to Harberh 30.1, Spendorów, it will not stand out from the ATC SCM40 in class either. Actually, I think because of the rise in prices today –It has features that will allow it to compete without any problems with speakers for PLN 20,000-30,000.He will play a bit differently and add his unusual look.
I tested Glenair 10 with really good lamps (actually selected from several dozen models that passed through my paws, and waiting to be tanned) – Audion Silver Night 300B monoblocks, Cary CAD300B W PP, Audio Note P1SE + PRE M2, orSun Audio SV-2A3 – they sounded great even with 3.5W!as well as Tangent Power Ampser II + Pre tube monoblocks.
I perceive Glenair as an attempt at Tannoy to go out to people – at least in terms of sound.The column retains the classic look and actually defines its audience with its shape itself.
Glenair and Vintage Tannoy
When it comes to the sound, it forgives the recordings a lot more than LGMs. A large kennel gives a really good quality, short bass. One that most tube amplifiers will like.

… and especially Cheviot and Arden, Berkeley – they have a much worse, looser bass, which in many systems is difficult to master. Eaton is a small monitor and you can feel it too. In HPD, the center is more colorful and the sound is contoured, more sweet. These are actually perfect loudspeakers for old jazz or blues, Pink Floyd – music from those years, the farther we go to the present day, the more it will be uphill.
Glenair, andTannoy on ferrite (SGM/LGM/SRM/LRM)
Ferrite (rigid suspension, golden bare frames) is a very studio-based game and actually intended only for good performances. They need to be colored – source on TDA, some slightly darker amplifier. If a number is recorded too thin, or too light or with a small amount of bass – we will not get it out with any electronics and it will be impossible to listen to. They are drier in color, but also faster and much more precise than the HPD series
Tannoy Glenair 10
This is a speaker for listening to music, not making albums. It is much faster than the Tannoye from before 90. There is no ‘something’ in the best performances that the older loudspeakers of this brand had,But you can listen to them not only the best performances and old music.
Old Tannoyes are not crazy about contemporary music – Glenair is quite good at dealing with the new repertoire, but it can also reflect the charm of old recordings.
Common with the ferrite series, they certainly have a type of bass – it is of good quality, fast and despite the large size, you can easily insert them up to 15 sq m, but LGM is much more colorful and you can squeeze more textures out of it.
Glenairy also have a ‘tannoy’ way of playing – open diameter, tangibility,They have been playing in full range from the beginning of the potentiometer.
Summation
Glenair 10 is a very good column. Really complete and possessing a lot of unique features that I know are desirable by many music lovers.
I always have a problem with writing only ‘very good’ because then someone reads other reviews, foamers from the industry, or a column description where each strand is perfect and it seems ‘very good’ is not enough.
For many, Glenair can be an outstanding column and the final one, for many, only a stop on the road. For what it was created and what I wrote about, it is really excellent and unique.
Old Tannoys are cherished primarily by the firmly embedded audiophiles who constantly torture only recordings from the 50-60-70 and 80s. Glenair will reflect their atmosphere, but in a slightly more modern style.
Glenair is:
- openness
- Very good bass with a small volume (it’s hard to break it)
- Great sound at low volume
- Nice wide scene
- Coherence and naturalness
- No coloration on the diameter, the purity of this band.
Any self-respecting fan of jazz / acoustics / vocals of sometannoyaHe should have at least once in life on dual-concentric.
Those who know Vintage will surely find something familiar in it that they will like. Those who Tannoy will not know yet will know if it is a brand for them.
For a music lover, it can be a target column, especially if we combine it well with electronics – they do not need detail or a lot of electricity. only a slightly warmer amplifier – likejade, Audio Noteor haiku neutral. They should also play well with Electrocompanient, and of course withPASS LABS. I would absolutely not combine them with raw / analytically playing electronics – we will gain nothing, and we will kill their character.
The value of Glenair, apart from the above-mentioned advantages, is also an unusual classic desingn.With Tannoy in the living room (if you like such a look) is similar to Sonus Faber. What doesn’t work, it looks like.
The advantage of Tannoy is that they are columns that have always found their group of recipients in the secondary market. The world knows them from the USA through Japan.We will never have a problem reselling them– It doesn’t mean we’ll sell them a week after the show 🙂
