B&W DM-6 Penguin: admission
When I started my adventure with audio, one of the first speakers that caught my eye were the B&W CM8 in white. The purchase did not finally take place because I chose Audio Academy Rhea, but it is so funny that in the following years I did almost everything not to buypost- Narrow column with small diameter pickups.

A lot of equipment fell through my house before I once again looked at the B&W brand – mainly due to the quite disappointing listening to the brand’s loudspeakers with Marek Levinson electronics. It was, if I’m not mistaken, the 804D model.
However, ‘Penguins’ is a different story – they play completely differently than the new models, and their appearance … to say controversial is probably not enough.
For me they are so ugly they are pretty. Characteristic, different, interesting, interesting. In my opinion, they give the living room more character than all the furniture, decorations and curtains combined. Hate or love it – I appreciate something like that 🙂

In the construction of the B&W DM-6, it agrees a lot with my current philosophy of perceiving potentially successful speakers. Foams at tweeters, a wide wall, a closed housing, a large bass driver, and a scatter around the mid-tone speaker. Ah, and the bass is a bit ahead. For one loudspeaker model, there are really many ‘patents’, which I like very much in the speakers. Kevlar medium is a kind of icing on the cake.
B&W DM-6 Penguin: Sound
So let’s move on to what is most interesting: how does it play?
Knowing Kevlar / Polykevlar mediums and using the opinion of one of my friends who once had this model – I knew that you can expect a very good diameter. I didn’t need more.

The remedy is really very good – quite natural, lively, addictive, but also charming and relaxing. It has a bit of a claw, but also a lot of charm. I think it is largely due to the muffled tweeter dome. Today we would call herlow flights. Its detail is far from Beryl or Revelator, but it plays soft and friendly. Importantly, he can show, but also does not try to play the first violin.
I think the mountain is very correct, or rather I should say – good enough not to disturb me.
And finally the bass. I have some mixed feelings here. The first feature after typing this model in Google is the buoyant bass. Let’s face it – it can be much better. For example, Kef Reference 105.2 standing next to it is an excellent example, but again Kef plays very well in this band.

The penguin bass has a lot of features that I personally like – it’s strong enough, but it doesn’t wake up. It gives a good foundation and rhythm to the music. On the other hand, on slightly more complex recordings, it simply gets lost and blends.
However, I would like to point out that we are talking here about the combination of the Audion lamp with 18W … and we are back to the next myth –Such loudspeakers need a powerful amplifier.
It’s true and not true. Audion is doing better than well with the vast majority of my repertoire. On vocals and acoustic music, we can rarely fault something. in electronics is vintageThat’s the style of playing, but still very nice.

100W JOLIDA JD1000A, which already has a lot of current, leads them supposedly better, but also due to high power it increases the bass in volume and although it should theoretically sound better … the effect is very similar.

B&W DM-6 Penguin – Summary
Penguins are one of the most interesting columns in my possession.
Sounds a bit vintageThis – their strongest point is definitely an extremely addictive diameter. Great vocals, very nice, warm, analog color. They are pleasant when listening quietly, but they can also rock with a slightly sharper repertoire and louder listening.
Their appearance is highly controversial, but in my opinion, in the right room, they can be a great, extravagant counterpoint in the decor
There are fewer and fewer well-kept copies – many are castrated from scattering and sponges, they have various types of modifications – such as other basics.
If you get the opportunity – it is worth buying and listening to such a park … or even listening and hiding in the attic and returning to them from time to time. If I am not mistaken, it is born in 78. There will be only less of it and they will only gain value – today such speakers are not made anymore, they are not designed. Today, simplicity dominates, high-gloss varnish and 5-6 inch small speakers that are not able to reflect the scale of the sound like penguins.
Probably onlyTannoy LGMAnd Kef Carlton II gave me so much fun to have when it comes to speakers – the appearance + sound and atmosphere they introduce to the apartment is unmistakable. from turntables is this league of satisfaction of having COMicro Seiki DD-40
